ZDF Heute reports on SonarWave Festival July 30 in Cologne: “Eine Nacht, fünf Floors und 20 internationale DJs: In der Kölner Papierfabrik feierten mehr als 1.500 Männer beim “Sonar Wave Festival” – mit der Loveparade im Hinterkopf, aber ohne Schweigeminute…

Bumm, bumm, bumm, der Boden unter den Füßen vibriert, der harte Rhythmus irritiert den eigenen Herzschlag, während bunte Lichtblitze zucken. Bumm, bumm, bumm, umschmeicheln die Rhythmen im nächsten Raum die Tänzer, die selbstversessen die Musik genießen.

Bumm, bumm, bumm bringen die Beats die Leute zum “fliegen”, erklärt Veranstalter Michael Zgonjanin. Geschäftig wuselt er umher, begrüßt am Einlass des “Sonar Wave Festivals” immer wieder Gäste, telefoniert und sorgt dafür, dass das “janze Jedöns” – seine Party – läuft.

Die Nachricht vom Unglück in Duisburg erreichte ihn auf einer Party in Brüssel, wobei er fast selbst auf der Loveparade dabei gewesen wäre: “Wir hatten eigentlich vor hinzufahren und Werbung für das Sonar Wave Festival zu machen, aber dann überschnitt sich das mit dem Termin in Belgien”, erinnert sich der Kölner.

Durch seine jahrelange Mitarbeit beim Christopher Street Day und bei anderen Großprojekten hat er ein Gefühl für Menschenmassen und weiß um die Unvorhersehbarkeit mancher Dinge, aber: “Man kann Sachen auch so machen, dass sie nur schief gehen können” – so wie in Duisburg. Deshalb jedoch das “Sonar Wave” absagen? Für Zgonjanin keine Option. “Wir gedenken der Menschen, doch eine Schweigeminute wird es nicht geben. Wir setzten der Trauer mit dieser Party und den Gay Games etwas entgegen und feiern das Leben.”

20 Djs stehen in dieser Nacht bei der Pre-Party zu den Gay Games hinter den Plattentellern und heizen den über 1 500 Gästen ein. Sie alle spielen elektronische Musik, die je nach Floor anders klingt, denn “es gibt viele verschiedene Bum Bums”, sagt Zgonjanin, “Manche Leute hätten ein Problem damit, wenn man diese Veranstaltung hier ‘Technoparty’ nennen würde.” Techno sei nur eine von zig Möglichkeiten, elektronische Beats zusammenzustückeln und zu spielen.

So wie Dj Mike Kelly Anfang der 90er Jahre, als Marusha und Mark ‘Oh die Spitze der deutschen Charts blockten und die Loveparade noch in Berlin stattfand. “Die Beats waren schnell, zu schnell, die Leute wurden älter und konnten dem irgendwann nicht mehr folgen”, versucht der gebürtige Australier die Evolution der elektronischen Rhythmen in einem Satz zu komprimieren. House, Progressive House, Underground Techno, Deep House, Trance – mit der Aufzählung aller Stilrichtungen ließen sich mit Leichtigkeit Seiten füllen, denn “es gibt immer mehr Nischen”, so Kelly.

Er selbst packt seine Platten nicht in eine Schublade, sondern mischt zusammen, was für seine Ohren zusammen gehört – auf schwulen, wie hetero Partys. “Der Unterschied zwischen beiden ist, dass die Heteros den DJ beim Tanzen angucken und du Zeuge wirst, wie die Musik deren Muskeln sagt, wie sie sich bewegen sollen. Die Schwulen interessieren sich mehr füreinander.”

Auf einer Party in Paris hörte er von der Katastrophe in Duisburg und musste unweigerlich an Dortmund denken, wo er selbst vor zwei Jahren auf der Loveparade aufgelegt hat: “Ich habe damals gedacht, die Stadt ist nicht für so eine Veranstaltung gemacht. Die Infrastruktur und all das passt einfach nicht”, erinnert sich Mike Kelly. Doch 2008 ging alles gut, 2010 in Duisburg nicht.

“Als Dj hätte ich, glaube ich, für einen Moment die Musik gestoppt, damit die Leute aufhorchen. Keine Ahnung, ob ich weitergemacht hätte. Das stelle ich mir sehr schwierig vor.” Als er sein Set auf dem “Sonar Wave Festival” um 5:30 Uhr startet, geht über dem Gelände der Papierfabrik schon die Sonne auf. Während sich in Duisburg die Menschen auf den Weg zum Trauergottesdienst machen, gehen in Köln die letzten Partygäste nach Hause.

We’ve gone south and done Sydney (They are STILL talking about the Amsterdam storm that hit them) and now we go east… to Germany! Furball podcast on Electronic Music Bears

The DJ set by Bramsterdam and Big General for the 25th edition of Furball in Amsterdam is published on Electronic Music Bears. EMB is an outlet for DJs and musicians to share the music they love. EMB prides itself on not being genre specific.

DJ’s Bramsterdam and Big General are off to a flying start. What began as just a hobby about 6 years ago, has grown into a full blown passion. Initially involved as the DJ’s for the Furball Café editions, these two are now a creative force behind the Amsterdam FURBALL parties and CRUISE CLUB CHURCH, holding a solid residency there in their hometown.

Internationally, the guys have worked the floor at the Great British Bear Bash (Manchester) and Bear Essentials (Sydney) and headlined Rome’s SUBWOOFER and Cologne’s BUTCH & BEAR parties in 2009 and 2010….

Butch and Bear in Cologne on July 2nd (CSD)

Bramsterdam and Big General will be back in Cologne to play Bears Cologne ‘Butch and Bear’ party during CSD on Friday July 2nd at Gloria Theater. The hottest bear dance party for all butch/bear/bearded guys. Party starts at 11 pm.

For their 25th anniversary, Bears Cologne were proud to offer a very special series of events in 2009. Manuel Carranco (MadBear) and DJ’s Bramsterdam and Big General played for a sold-out Butch and Bear party on November 27, 2009 in Club Gloria in Cologne; 800 bears on the dance floor… And the boys from Amsterdam Furball are back for CSD!
